Designing Web-based Library Management System
🔎This research article "Designing Web-Based Library Management System" by Isega Weldu Arya and Adhana Megsteab, published in the International Journal of Engineering Research and Technology(IJERT) in October 2020, focuses on developing a computerized system to replace the current manual operations of the Asmara community College of Education (ACCE) library in Eritrea.
Authors have mentioned the inefficiency of manual record keeping systems such as data loss, misplacement of files, damage after a time of usage. There goal was to introduce a web-based library management system (LMS) that could make the library operations faster, more reliable and accessible to users online. The system design parameters are Java, PHP,HTML and MySQL to handle functions like borrowing , returning books and record management.
By addressing the challenges of traditional library system, this study has aimed to promote digital transformation in education, improve access to learning materials.
🏪This research identifies the problem of inefficiency and disorganization in the manual library management, which is causing losing of physical records, damage of records, difficulty of book tracking and the heavy workload that librarians face.
The main objectives of the study are to Develop a web-based system that automates library operations, remove paper-based data handling to save time and reduce errors, create a database-driven platform that allows remote access to users.
The methodology includes several system design stages like, Database design : Using Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs) to define relationships among users, books, and administrators controlling the duplication of data. System architecture: Designing an framework connecting the user interface, admin panel, and database. Module design: Has break the system into smaller logical components using flowcharts.Testing: Conducting Unit, integration, and user acceptance testing to ensure reliability and accuracy.The results show that the system performs all required tasks efficiently adding new members, borrowing and returning books, managing e-books, and storing data securely in the database. This study demonstrates that implementing such technology can improve library efficiency, user satisfaction, and information accessibility.
The research article presents a well-organized and practical approach to solve a real world problem in education institute. It highlights how the information technology can be applied for the effectiveness in the library management.
The authors have clearly clarified and identified the problem describing the challenges faced by physical libraries such as disorganization, time loss, and data damage which shows a strong justification for their research. The paper follows the design and testing stages of software development including ER diagrams, architecture diagrams and flowchart to show the technical strength. It is also has designed for a existing institution, which increase the practical value. and also have mentioned the accessible technologies such as MySQL and PHP ensuring that this is replicable in similar environments.
And as weaknesses the research focuses only in one institution (ACCE) , which reduce the ability to use the system generally to other contexts. There is also have no survey or user feedback to know how librarians and students perceived the system usability, satisfaction or outcomes. Also as the system is web-based, data protection also should have been discussed in more deeply, especially user authentication and privacy. The study does not mentioned the cost of implementation or about maintenance, which are important.
Regardless of these these weaknesses, the research provides a good digital transformation in library system. The study emphasis on how the development of technology can be used to further innovation.
In conclusion, this research successfully demonstrates how technology can enhance the improvement of web-based library system, by shifting from a manual to a digital system. The authors have highlighted the improvements in efficiency and user accessibility, while it could be more benefited from deeper attention to cyber security and more about practical design and the usability in other contexts too.
Future research could extend the system to multiple institutions, use a cloud-based storage, and using AI tools for search and recommendations. This is a good example that can enhance the learning environments through technological solutions.

ReplyDeleteThe use of ER diagrams to define relationships among users is an approach that can definetly be used to solve this problem. A well defined ER diagram would result in a well defined database therefore data can be stored more effectively.
