Critical Review for Research article : Video Games in/as Cultural Significance Of Video by uog1124008

The research conducted by Yodovish et al. (2025) and article published as Video Games in/as Culture: The Evolving Cultural Significance of Video Games” in International Journal of the Sociology of Leisure demonstrates how video games are more than entertainment. Video games are a major part of society, culture as well as economy. The article takes part of GAMEHEATS project funded by European Union. The project tells how video game affects the culture. Authors argued, Video games are a mixture of technology, storytelling and art. The impact of that spread over movies, music and education. The article consider about challenge that stop society from appreciating video games, like lack of diversity and social stigma.

The main objective of this is to clearly define the cultural importance at video games. The panel researched to answer: How do video games act like a cultural product. What limits that? Why video games not widely accepted?”

The panel conducted a workshop using 82 people. That group included game developers, teachers, journalist and some other professionals. They discussed about video games as a art, modern impact of video games to society as well as issues available at mean time.

At the end, The workshop found video games are connected with many variations such as art, music, animations, films, storytelling and programming. Video games also affected the other areas of culture like education, fashion and sport.

However the case is there are some limitations that stops most of the people engaging with games. The workshop call it “Playwell”. It contains problems like complicated language, social stigma, few role models and lack of women representations.

The workshop shows how video games can help society to study different cultures and experience them. The Pirate queen, Bury me My love represents the social awareness. The panel suggest to evaluates visible role models, make games easy to understand and show games as cultural valuable objectives.

Burry me My love and The pirate queen

The research has many positives. The workshop method is great. Rather than just asking questions, giving surveys.  This bought real time discussion. It opens the path to detail-full rich information. Next, this clearly demonstrates video games are not just about the entertainment. Video games are cultural and artistic social tools. Focusing on diversity, social impact is very important. It makes research applicable for modern society.

But this has some negatives. The limitation of participation; this is limited to Europeans. The clues not applicable for whole world. Most of the participants are gamers. Their opinion depends on that. Mostly a positive review. The study not capable enough to remove the limitation of most people from playing games.

Otherwise the study is useful. It roughly helpful to show video games are part of culture. It is enough to incept the improve of industry.

This is very useful to understand the importance of video games in modern culture. They are not only for fun. It is a combination of art, technology. “Playwell” idea is interesting. I had not realized that lack of role models and women representation may stop people form engaging with video games. The way video games teach about social awareness is quite interesting. Bury me My love players can understands life like a Syrian refugee. It is a powerful experience anyone can not feel from books or movies. Workshop is convenience. It represents different peoples from gaming and academic around Europe.

According to article video games are important in culture. Positives are it clearly demonstrates video games as a variation of forms. Workshop useful for deep knowledge. Negatives are this only limited to Europe, may biased, no detailed solutions for limitations. Research suggest future studies could consider about the other part of the world. Find solutions to “Playwall”. Overall, article is convincing.

  3. One small suggestion for future reviews: a quick table contrasting the workshop’s European sample (n=82) with global player demographics (e.g., Newzoo 2024 reports 48 % of gamers in Asia) would instantly visualise the geographic bias you rightly flag.
